CFCs caused recent warming, not CO2

Saturday, January 9th, 2010

University of Waterloo professor Qin-Bin Lu recently published a paper in peer-reviewed journal, Physics Reports that showed that the warming of the last few decades up to 2000 were caused by CFCs. And since the level of CFCs in the atmosphere is starting to drop because of a worldwide agreement in 1987, the temperature is now starting to drop.

Professor Lu, a path-breaking scientist in the field of ozone protection, made his CO2 discovery by accident — he was looking for culprits in the formation of the ozone hole over Antarctica. A chief suspect was CO2: Climate models produced by climatologists showed that CO2 would have devastating effects on the ozone layer, significantly enlarging the ozone hole over Antarctica and dramatically enlarging it over the Arctic. But when Dr. Lu compared the imagined output of the climate models with the actual measurements taken real-time by satellites and weather balloons, the models turned out to be soaring failures.

“I didn’t see any CO2 effect on temperature or ozone depletion over the South Pole from 1956 to 2008,” explained Dr. Lu, surprised at how totally different the real-world measurements were from those that the climate model predicted. The real-world measurements showed CO2 to be largely irrelevant -”the global warming on Earth’s surface between 1950 and 2000 is pretty much due to CFCs,” he concluded. “The models say that CO2 is a major greenhouse gas but the facts show otherwise.”

In contrast, CFCs have long been known to be a greenhouse gas that, on a molecule per molecule basis, is 10,000 times more potent than CO2. Professor Lu’s satellite and balloon measurements showed that factor of 10,000 to have been a gross underestimate!

Had CFCs never been widely used in our air conditioners and refrigerators, Dr. Lu believes, the Earth would not have warmed in the last century. And had CFCs not been banned, he would not be predicting a period of global cooling.

But with the CFC ban, and the subsequent phase-out of this ozone destroying chemical, global warming stopped and, early this decade, a period of global cooling began. This cooling will last “at least 50 years, and possibly 70 years” as the global temperatures return to their pre-CFC levels, he explains, barring the rise of an alternative to CFC, or the introduction of another greenhouse gas into the atmosphere.

The cooling, he predicts, will be gentle -”after 2010 or so, the globe temperature will experience a small bounce back but a general declining tendency will not change.” Neither will the new levels be worrisome -Earth will find itself back at the levels of the 1950s, which themselves hadn’t changed much over the previous century.

His only concern right now is that some aspects (although not the main conclusions) might be suspect because he used data (as did many others) from the U.K. Climate Research Unit at East Anglia University which is now suspect.

Another summary of why there is no man made warming

Thursday, September 17th, 2009

I am unhappy that the media are ignoring the ongoing evidence that man-made global warming is a myth but there are occasional good items. James Benedem of MATC Times, The Student Newspaper of Milwaukee Area Technical College, has written an excellent summary which I have reproduced below.

Skeptic: Person indisposed to accept popularity or authority as proving the truth of opinions.

The May 14 issue of the Times published an article on melting ice in the Arctic Ocean and labeled it an “accelerating crisis” that could lead to a “runaway catastrophe.”

The essay concludes: “What must we do… We already know the answer – drastically reduce greenhouse emissions.”  This is a response to that essay.

The real question concerning global warming: Is carbon dioxide the significant cause of warming the earth? It all hinges on this question: Does adding CO2 to the atmosphere make the world much warmer? Here is what skeptical scientists have to say about this question:

  • The “greenhouse signature” is missing. If greenhouse gases are warming the earth, computer models say we should see a “hot spot” of air 10 kilometers above the tropics.
  • Weather balloons from the U.S. Climate Change Science Program measured the global atmosphere during the warming period of 1979-1999 and found no sign of the predicted “hot spot.”
  • Ice cores reveal that CO2 levels rise and fall hundreds of years after temperatures change. They cannot be a cause of warming since they follow the warming, they do not precede it.
  • The world is not warming any more. Satellite data shows the world has not warmed since 2001, even though carbon dioxide levels in the atmosphere increased.
  • Carbon dioxide is already absorbing almost all of the light that it can. CO2 “soaks up” its favorite wavelengths of light and it is close to the saturation point. More CO2 in the atmosphere does not translate into significantly more warming.

There are many scientists who support these opinions. This past spring a conference was held in NYC to examine the “global warming theory” and over 30,000 scientists signed documents that supported the position that nature, not man, controls the planet.

Here are the words of just two of the many skeptics:

  • Botanist Dr. David Bellamy, a famous UK environmental campaigner and former lecturer at Durham University: “… global warming is largely a natural phenomenon. The world is wasting stupendous amounts of money on trying to fix something that can’t be fixed.”
  • Dr. Kiminori Itob, award- winning Ph.D. environmental chemist, on warming fears: “… the worst scientific scandal in the history… When people come to know what the truth is, they will feel deceived by science and scientists.”

Well, all of this wouldn’t matter so much if it were simply two people disagreeing over the weather.

But, the alarming fact is that Congress proposed legislation this past summer – it passed in the House of Representatives already – that would severely limit carbon emissions.

If this or anything similar were put into law, it would have a disastrous impact on the US economy.

President Obama clearly knew this when he said: “Under my plan of “Cap and Trade,” energy costs would necessarily skyrocket.”

The bill amounts to a huge tax on everyone – one that would fall most heavily on the poor. And it would be one more step along the path of government intrusion into the private affairs of every citizen.

  1. I have citations for every claim and quotation featured in this article. Please contact me if you would like to check them.
  2. The ice in the Antarctic is increasing at about the same rate as the Arctic is decreasing. This is a pattern that has happened before. And the polar bears are not in any danger, but are actually increasing in number.

I am sure James would be happy to see this get wider circulation.

Antarctica is cooling – global warming theory says it should be warming

Saturday, April 18th, 2009

Prestigious Nature magazine in its January 22, 2009, issue featured an article by Steig et al, including Michael Mann, creator of the discredited “hockey stick”, that reported to have found “significant warming” in Antarctica.  However, according to Ken Gregory,  the analysis to date by several scientists, led by Steve McIntyre of Climate Audit, shows that the paper is not holding up to rigorous scrutiny.

In fact,  Antarctica is cooling and this agrees with the sun-activity theory of climate change which says that when the sun is more active (as it was up until a couple of years ago), there are less cosmic rays to seed clouds, causing Antarctica to cool as the very white ice is more reflective than clouds, while the rest of the planet warms where clouds are more reflective than the ground, even in the Arctic. In contrast, the CO2 greenhouse theory predicts that the coolest part of the planet, Antarctica, should show the most warming due to the very low water vapour content in the air.

Put in non-scientific terms – the theory that Global warming is caused by CO2 (let alone man-made CO2) is bullshit [Scientific translation: not proved!]
